With uninterrupted views of the finest sights in the city, this tower is a hotspot for special occasions and sightseeing – particularly for couples drawn to the tower’s legendary love stories and prophecies. The Maiden’s Tower (Kız Kulesi) is the most recognized and symbolic landmark in the city, as it seemingly floats in the waters of the Bosphorus just 200 meters from the Salacak seaside. Since 24 B.C. the tiny isle has played many important roles in Istanbul’s illustrious past: a customs station, a Byzantine tollbooth, a lighthouse, an Ottoman watchtower, and nowadays, a restaurant and café. Boats to the tower depart from Salacak and Kabataş ports throughout the day (until 6:00pm) and evening (8:00pm-11:30pm). Timetables are available (in Turkish) on the Kizkulesi.com.tr website.
